Differences between earache and toothache

Can problems with my teeth cause ear pain?

Earache and toothache can have similar symptoms for a lot of people and it could be hard to differentiate where the pain is coming from. Some earaches can originate from severe tooth inflammation. We call this referred pain. When determining the cause of your pain, Dr Jegatha Thiru will examine your mouth, check your medical history and discuss her findings with you.

Symptoms of Toothache

Toothache can be due to several reasons- A cavity to infected gums or teeth or grinding/clenching your teeth, ear infection or sinus infection.

Symptoms of a tooth inflammation or infection can include sharp throbbing pain, an aching sensation after you have eaten or consumed a hot/cold beverage, bad breath (halitosis), fever, swollen glands, and earaches. Make sure to consult Dr Jegatha Thiru at Victoria Dental Centre, London ON to find the cause of your toothache.

Symptoms of Earache

Earaches may be caused by fluid in the eardrum, infection, injury, blockage, having a cold or flu, or tooth and jaw pain.

Ear infection symptoms can vary depending on the problem. You might suffer from an earache and fever, or experience dizziness and nausea or earache alone.

The symptoms of earaches and toothaches overlap, and this is mostly due to the fact that they are in close proximity and are connected by some internal structures.
